THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2012 will go into the annals of the people of La, especially, the Christian folk as the day of Glory and Honour to their Maker – Jehovah (Yaweh), and His Son, Jesus (Yeshua) as the names of the two heavenly beings reigned supreme for close to two hours at the shrine of the High Priest of the Lakpa deity, Lakpa Wulomo.
The La Traditional Council in line with its culture and traditions in the celebration of the annual Homowo festival, on Monday, August 6, 2012, performed the Gbεmlilaa, that is, ban on general noise making. Among all the rituals performed during the celebration of the Homowo festival of the Ga people, it is the ban on noise making, especially, drumming, clapping and dancing, which affects the Christian community most; and very often, the Churches become the target of any Task Force set up to enforce this ban.
According to sources close to the La Traditional Council, on that fateful day, the High Priest of the Lakpa deity, Nii Yemo Obroni IV who has not been very healthy during these periods, went into ‘coma’ at about 16.30 hours GMT.
According to our sources, other Wulomei of the town, who were at the shrine to visit their compatriot, together with other fetish priestesses went into an unyielding prayer session, calling on the names of the Almighty God, Jehovah, and His Son, Jesus, relegating other gods to the background.
“The prayers were stopped only after the Lakpa Wulomo has been successfully revived and gained consciousness,” one traditional leader who is also a relative of the High Priest told Wojaku.
“What baffled me most was where the fetish priestesses got copies of the Holy Bible from, with which they prayed fervently…even more than we know some Christians to do,” another opinion leader who pleaded anonymity noted.
Wojaku was told, the prayer session was led by the Koolo Wulomo (chief Priest of the Koolo deity of the Abafun Quarter), who is said to be gifted with the gift of prophesy, and has prophesied a couple of days earlier that something nasty might occur to the High Priest before the Homowo celebration may be over.
Incidentally, amidst the prayer intercession, other ‘die-hard’ traditionalists were said to have made consultations with their ancestral gods as to what went wrong or amiss in the celebration of the Homowo to merit the near demise of the Lakpa Wulomo.
Wojaku was told that some fetish priestesses who were said to have been possessed by the gods explained that the gods were exceedingly angry because of the various ‘bloods’ which were accidentally spilled within the year including the recent plane crash at the El Wak stadium but purification rites were yet to be performed.
“It was expected ‘by the gods’ that such cleansing and purification was done before the commencement of the rites towards the Homowo celebration,” an elder at the shrine told Wojaku.
Other ‘blood-spilling’ accidents include an accident in the Kpeshie lagoon which claimed a couple of lives, the gruesome murder of one Anang Rasta, an indigene at Borla junction near the Nativity Presbyterian Church, La, and another accident on the Giffard road at the precincts of the La Cemetery which claimed the lives of some ‘Sakawa’ guys.
Earlier reports by Wojaku indicate that the gods remained silent during the Homowo celebration because of certain anomalies made during the performance of some traditional rites. This time round, the gods are said to have spoken because of other anomalies.
However, a couple of concerned indigenes who spoke with Wojakugh.com indicate that the recent development of a prayer session at the Lakpa shrine confirms Jesus’ supremacy in the realm of the spirit world.
One Christian lady cannot help but continue to sign from the Methodist Hymn Book thus:Jesus shall reign where’re the sun Doth his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more … Where He displays His healing power, Death and curse are known no more; In Him the tribes of Adam boast More blessings than their father lost … Let every creature rise, and bring Its grateful honours to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth prolong the joyful strain. Amen
