FORMER PRESIDENT John Agyekum Kufuor says the Electoral Commission (EC) is answerable to the people of Ghana and should heed the demand for a new voters’ register.

He is strongly backing a pro-New Patriotic Party group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), which grabbed national attention after a demonstration to push for a new voter’s register turned violent.

The pro-NPP group is pushing the party’s position that the current register is bloated with names of at least 76,000 foreigners.

Former President John Kufuor told leaders of the group when they paid a courtesy call on him Thursday; “I am with you entirely, completely that the Electoral Commission should not plead excuses like cleaning the voters’ register.

“The Electoral Commission is not a power unto itself. I think this should be made clear” he said and prevailed on the Commission to listen to the voice of the people from whom the electoral body derives its power.

“People demanding needn’t even be the majority…if truly some sections feel that they need to be sure of the quality of the vote….then those people should entitled and the Electoral Commission is accountable to the people generally.”

President John Agyekum Kufuor’s residence was the next stop after the pressure group visited former President Jerry John Rawlings to garner top-level support for a push for a new voters’ register.

Former President Rawlings broke his silence on the controversial political demand saying ‘if new voters’ register will restore confidence, let’s do it’
“As a sitting government I think if we feel pretty confident about that register we should have no fears in doing what needs to be done to win the confidence…to take away doubts,” Rawlings observed.

Since the NPP began this campaign for a new voters’ register this year, some leading voices have weighed into the matter. The Ghana Catholics Bishop Conference says it favours a new register if evidence presented by the NPP is found to be true.

A stateswoman, Dr. Joyce Aryee also believes, a new voters’ register will clear the controversy and cure any credibility concerns.
