Appoint New EC Chair – Farrakhan

Afari GyanA MEMBER of the National Democratic Congress (NDC ), Mr Abdallah Ishaq Farrakhan, has called for the appointment of a new Chairman for the Electoral Commission (EC) to participate in the conduct of the district level elections.

He explained that although the incumbent, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, had not yet retired, it was important that his successor was named and made to oversee the elections, along with the current chairman.

That, he said , would ensure that whoever was appointed had some experience with regard to the conduct of elections before Election 2016.

He was speaking with the Daily Graphic in Tema.

“I heard a Deputy Chairman of the EC, Mr Amadu Sulley, say the commission wanted to use the district level elections as a litmus test for the 2016 presidential and parliamentary polls.

“If that is the case, then it is important that whoever will take over from the current chairman, especially if he is to be appointed from outside the EC, be made to play a leading role in the district level elections, so that he garners some experience before the crucial 2016 elections are conducted,” he said.

Mr Farrakhan, who contested the position of general secretary of the NDC last December but lost to the incumbent, Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, said it would have been ideal to appoint someone within the EC as the new chairman but agreed that that could not be guaranteed.

Commenting on the botched district level elections, he said Dr Afari-Gyan had failed the nation and should have resigned.

However, he said if Dr Afari-Gyan’s performance since 1992 was taken into consideration, he could be said to have done quite well.

On his future role in the party, Mr Farrakhan said he would soon embark on a tour of all the regions to canvass for more votes for the NDC.
